Frequently Asked Questions
When will project construction begin?
A significant portion of construction costs will be funded through
grants from the State of New York. These grants have been awarded, and
the City is currently working through the grant contract process. Once
grant agreements have been executed, final design and construction will
commence.
Where will the project be located?
The new facility will be on the site of the current Visitors'
Center along Seneca Lake. The existing building on the site is showing
serious signs of wear. Recent structural evaluations have indicated
that demolition and development of a new building is the most cost effective
solution. The new facility (pictured above) will take advantage of the
ready access to the City's boat launch and docking facilities to ensure that
a wide array of on and off water programming can be delivered.
Where will the Visitors' Center, Museum staff, and Chamber
offices be located during construction?
As the construction timeline finalizes, project partners will
identify space that meets operational needs. It is envisioned that
temporary facilities will be located in close proximity to the permanent
structure.
What are total project costs and sources of funding?
Phase I of this project calls for development of a 10,000 s.f.
facility for the Museum and Visitors' Center. Total construction costs
for this effort are $2 million. These are wholly funded by a grant
from the New York State Dormitory Authority. Museum fit-out and start
up costs are estimated at $1.3 million. These are funded in part by a
grant from New York State's Local Waterfront Revitalization Program.
The remainder of start-up and operational costs will be raised in an
aggressive capital campaign currently underway by the Museum and its over
300 members.
Future phases of the project will be funded through grants and private donations by Museum members and other benefactors.
Is the City selling the land for this project?
No. Construction of this facility was made possible by a
grant to the City of Geneva. The newly constructed building will be a
City-owned facility, and leased to project partners.
