Education has always been a priority for residents of Geneva.

Fifty-seven percent of Genevans age 18-24 have either an associate degree or some college experience. Another 10 percent have a bachelor’s degree or higher. Three out of four Genevans over 25 years of age have completed high school and most have some college experience. To its credit, Geneva has one of the highest per capita concentrations of Ph.D.s in the country. One of every 62 persons age 25 or older holds a doctorate degree.

Geneva’s elementary and secondary schools are among the finest in the nation.  Geneva is listed with the Central Finger Lakes Region as Top 100 Communities for Young People.

The Geneva City School District serves the City and Town of Geneva and portions of neighboring towns. Total enrollment in grades K-12 is approximately 2,600. There are two elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. The district has a full-time instructional staff of 209 and a full-time support staff of 156. Classes in grades K-6 average 22 students, while classes for grades 7-12 average 19 students. Student scores on standardized tests are comparable to or higher than county and state averages, and approximately 90 percent of graduating seniors go on to institutions of higher learning. Technology is an important part of Geneva City Schools; every classroom is equipped with at least five networked computers. There are programs for gifted and talented students at all levels, and the high school program includes Advanced Placement courses in Language & Composition, Literature & Composition, Engineering, U.S. History, Calculus, Chemistry, and Biology. The district also offers career-oriented educational programs and vocational offerings through the Wayne-Finger Lakes Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES). Extra-curricular activities include nearly all sports, marching band, jazz ensemble, Varsity Singers, a student broadcasting system, yearbook, language clubs, and more. (781-0400).

DeSales-St. Stevens School (grades K-8) and DeSales Regional High School (grades 9-12). Combined enrollment is over 500, and there is a teaching staff of 32. Approximately 90 percent of graduating seniors go on to institutions of higher learning. (789-5111).

The Geneva area also offers excellent child care and child development programs for pre-school age children. Most programs are designed for working parents, and many provide transportation to and from school. A few also provide family services and activities such as dance lessons and gymnastics. Geneva’s Head Start Program, which enrolls approximately 85 students, has been cited as a model of excellence for other Head Start programs across the country.

There are many excellent opportunities for higher education in and around Geneva.

Geneva is the home of Hobart Collegefor men (founded in 1822) and William Smith Collegefor women (founded in 1908). The two Acoordinate@ colleges share common facilities on a 170‑acre campus, including 50 residences, over 30 classroom and administrative buildings, a library (noted as one of the finest undergraduate libraries in the United States), two dining halls, a cafe, a pub, two gymnasia, a sport & recreation center, a Third World Cultural Center, a chapel, an infirmary, a student activity center, a post office, a bookstore, a theater, an art center, a computer center, an NPR-affiliate radio station, a guest house, and numerous athletic fields. Approximately 2,000 students are enrolled, with a student-faculty ratio of 12 to 1. Ninety-eight percent of faculty members hold a Ph.D. or equivalent. The colleges follow a trimester schedule, in which students take three classes in three terms, allowing for an extra course each year. Students are involved in numerous clubs and organizations, and in several varsity, club, and intramural sports. The colleges also maintain an extensive community service program which links students to the Geneva community. (789-5500).

In 1984, Finger Lakes Community Collegein Canandaigua opened a small satellite center in Geneva. Today, enrollment at the center exceeds 2,000 students, and over 70 courses are offered, as well as GED, BOCES, and non‑credit courses. The college also offers graduate level courses through SUNY Brockport. The Geneva Center has a very active, student‑run social board which sponsors a variety of activities. (789-6701).

Geneva is also home to one of the country’s most respected horticultural research institutes: The New York State Agricultural Experiment Station. The station began operations on March 1, 1882, and has been part of Cornell University since 1923. The station’s mission is to support the New York fruit and vegetable industry with research and extension programs that will improve the health of the population, maintain a prosperous rural environment, and improve the state’s economic climate. There are about 330 full-time employees at the station, 60 of whom are Cornell professors and project leaders. There are more than 90 graduate students from throughout the world doing their thesis research at the Station for master and doctorate degrees in the Cornell Graduate School. Research is conducted in greenhouses, laboratories, growth chambers, and in the field. In the immediate Geneva area, the station maintains 700 acres of land for its field research program. The station also has two outlying branch laboratories. (789-2011).

Other fine colleges and universities are located within an hour’s drive of Geneva. These include Syracuse University, LeMoyne College, and Onondaga Community College in Syracuse; the Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Rochester, Nazareth College, St. John Fisher College, and Monroe Community College in Rochester; Cornell University and Ithaca College in Ithaca; Keuka College in Keuka Park; and Wells College in Aurora.
