Sewer Maintenance maintains 84 miles of sanitary sewers and 30 miles of storm sewers. This
includes 850 manholes and 1700 catch basins. Staff carries out routine
maintenance work and responds to emergency situations. This work is
critical to reducing inflow/infiltration into the system. Staff at
Marsh Creek Wastewater Treatment Plan maintain and operate all aspects of
the plant. It is actively involved in working with Engineering to
upgrade and expand the Plant as required by DEC.
2007 Accomplishments include:
- Worked on upgrades and improvements to the Marsh Creek Wastewater
Treatment Plant and the Gulvin Park Pump Station, including a major
relief sewer along the lakefront;
- Continued cross training of water and wastewater treatment plant
operators;
- Provided safety training and support for all DPW staff;
- Rebuilt over 75 catch basins, cleaned 500 catch basins, and
completed routine maintenance on miles of storm and sanitary sewer
lines; and
- Continued efforts to reduce inflow and infiltration to the
collection system per DEC order of consent.
2008 Priorities include:
- Continue to operate Marsh Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant to the
standards set forth by the New York State Department of Environmental
Conservation and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency;
- Operate the Marsh Creek Plant to state standards and continue
efforts to reduce the amount of infiltration and inflow to the
collection system;
- Continue program to rebuild and clean stormwater catch basins
throughout the City;
- Complete upgrades and improvements at the Marsh Creek Wastewater
Treatment Plant and Gulvin Park pump station; and
- Continue improvements and upgrades to the laboratory to meet NYS
requirements.
